Action movies and video games have enjoyed a symbiotic relationship for decades, with one playing off the other for fun and profit. In the case of Pistol Whip, the latest game from developer Cloudhead Games, the pairing of blockbuster sensibilities and VR gameplay results in a new kind of shooter that’s part Hollywood spectacle and part music video. Pistol Whip is out today on Oculus Quest and the Rift platform.
Each stage in Pistol Whip takes players through a different shootout, complete with a unique soundtrack, enemies, and bullet hell-style gameplay. Styled after wildly popular action flicks, the core gameplay in Pistol Whip feels like a high-octane ballet of bullets and bad guys, with players blasting hordes of enemies while dancing through a storm of incoming gunfire.
Part music game, it also nudges players to create their own kinetic beats as they shoot, dodge, and—yes, pistol whip—bad guys to earn a high score. It feels like standing on one of those moving walkways people use at airports; if airports had killer androids and other virtual goons, that is. As for the soundtrack itself, players can expect several pulse-pounding tracks featuring EDM artists from Kannibalen Records, with more coming soon.
