Celebrate Black History Month in VR

Oculus Blog
February 9, 2021

Black History Month is an annual observance in February originating in the United States in 1976. It began as a way to honor and recognize the significant impact that Black people have had on the world. While those things can not possibly be relegated to 28 days, the hope is during this month, everyone will reflect on and learn more about the sacrifices, inventions, and contributions that were and are “Made By” Black people in America.

To celebrate Black History Month, we’re curating a “Made By” collection that highlights Black creatives and the Black experience in America and beyond.

Elevating Black Voices: Made By Black Creatives from Around the World

Walk with vocal activist Melanie DeMore as she shares how the power and connectivity of singing can transcend divisive forces and spread love. As the saying she relates goes, “A song can hold you up when there seems to be no ground beneath you.” This 360° video is available on Quest Platform.

Gr8ness is a seven-minute 360° documentary experience about art, creativity, friendship, and hope. It takes place in Capetown, South Africa, where Ethan, an at-risk, teenager lives. While 70% of 20 million youth in South Africa have been victims or perpetrators of crime and 37% of every 100,000 youth have dropped out of school, the documentary explores how these statistics can be changed by exposing youth to the opportunities of creative industries. Gr8ness is available on the Quest Platform.

Fresh off the heels of his latest release, Grammy-nominated artist Wiz Khalifa delivers a special set, live from Los Angeles. Watch the “See You Again” and “Black and Yellow” rapper perform some of his biggest hits and songs from his brand-new EP, The Saga of Wiz Khalifa. Available on the Quest Platform.

Check out Oculus TV on the Quest Platform for more content highlighting diverse creatives including athletes, musicians, storytellers, and developers.

IN PROTEST Docu-Series: Made By Black Immersive Storytellers

IN PROTEST: Grassroots Stories from the Front Lines is a 360° VR film docu-series chronicling the heroic Black voices in America confronting inequality and injustice today. Watching the series in VR gives you a front row seat to the Black Lives Matter movement, both for those unable to physically participate and for those that want to learn more from activists on the ground.

Capturing current events means that the immersive filmmakers on this project (like Tiago, who you’ll meet in Atlanta Episode 2) are putting themselves in harm’s way to film the frontlines of protests. IN PROTEST is made by GRX Immersive Labs, a core team of Black immersive storytellers and creative professionals.
