The latest original motion picture from Disney•Pixar, Coco hits the big screen next week, and we’re excited to share that you can step inside the world of the film on Rift today!

“Pixar and Disney take human imagination and render it larger than life,” says Disney•Pixar’s Coco VR Producer and Academy Award-winner Marc Sondheimer. “VR is the natural next step in our evolution, letting people experience these worlds in living color.”

What makes Pixar’s first-ever VR experience so special is the high degree of interactivity and ability to share the experience with friends. Not only can you journey through the Land of the Dead with up to three other people in VR, you can model outfits, decorate your calaca head, and enjoy the Disney•Pixar magic together.

“Going to the theater is a semi-social experience—you watch a film together, but it’s passive,” explains Oculus Executive Producer Yelena Rachitsky. “In VR, you can actually go on an adventure with a friend. These experiences can create lasting memories, just like going on a trip together. But unlike a journey in real life, VR lets you explore the gorgeous world of Coco, full of unique Easter eggs that sprinkle a bit of magic at every turn.”

The Coco film team worked closely with their VR counterparts to create assets and animations that stayed true to the movie, while Magnopus brought the art to life in VR, adding social and interactive layers. Oculus collaborated with both teams, providing creative and technical feedback from early development through to completion.

“Pixar’s films are masterpieces, and we didn’t want to just reproduce what you can see on screen,” says Rachitsky. “We wanted to put together an experience that feels inherently VR—where it’s all about the audience.”

To that end, Coco VR takes you behind the scenes, with unreleased footage, actual concept art, and storyboards from the film. Disney previewed the experience at select Dia de los Muertos festivities, and you can get a sneak peek at participating Disney Stores and movie theaters now through November 19.

This is the latest result of our partnership with Disney, which also includes Moana’s Kakamora Orchestra, a 360° video on Facebook, and Lumiere’s Dress Rehearsal, an interactive experience available through the Disney Movies VR app on Rift and Gear VR. We can’t wait to see what comes next.

Check out Disney•Pixar’s Coco VR on Rift today, and stay tuned for a Gear VR version alongside the film’s theatrical release on November 22!
