inXile entertainment knows a thing or two about VR, having shipped The Mage’s Tale for the Oculus Rift Platform in 2017. Now, they’re branching out from the world of RPGs and teaming up with publisher Thirdverse to deliver a team-based, post-apocalyptic shooter, due out for PC VR later this year.
“After we finished The Mage’s Tale, we were looking to take our learnings forward to a new VR experience, and at the same time a lot of us were also enamored with the emergent gameplay we were seeing come out of PvP shooters and the survival genre,” explains inXile entertainment Studio Head Brian Fargo. “So we set about seeing if we could create something even more compelling by weaving in an interesting setting, along with beautiful visuals, and pull that off in VR.”
Frostpoint VR will pit two teams of 10 players each against each other in high-intensity PvP game modes, with a PvE twist. Set in an abandoned military base in Antarctica, the game tasks each team with the need to gear up and move out, dominating their opponents while protecting themselves from an ever-present biomechanical threat.
“We have a deep, extensive story and background originally developed by Daniel Wilson (author of Robopocalypse),” says Fargo. “It’s something we’re going to be layering in and revealing as time goes on. For now, players know that they’re fighting an unknown force of biomechanical creatures. Everything else will be revealed in time.”
The game promises more than a dozen highly detailed weapons that can be handled with one or both hands, plus tools and munitions to round out your arsenal, including health kits, armor upgrades, turrets, grenades, and tracking upgrades.
“The world in Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds is vast, while the action is dense,” says Thirdverse Co-Founder Kiyoshi Shin. “We want players to be challenged to experiment and find the right combinations of gear and weapons to survive and level up their skills to be effective in this punishing yet highly enjoyable game. We’re looking forward to seeing how audiences respond to Frostpoint VR: Proving Grounds’ gameplay in the next several months.”
Frostpoint VR has a free Open Beta planned for September, with the first 10,000 players having a chance to win a copy of the game as part of inXile’s “Play to Own” campaign.
“We’ve done a lot of work to ensure players can have fun no matter when they play, with bots filling in for players if servers aren’t full, and the AI-controlled enemies,” Fargo notes. “We’re also running the Play to Own campaign, which will help ensure a vibrant community from day-one by giving people a free copy of the game for meeting certain thresholds during the Open Beta. We’ll have more details in the future for what folks need to do, but we want to reward those who are playing early and often, and our hope is they’ll become our most active supporters and players over the long term.”
