We’re back with the next entry in Meta Must Plays, our weekly article series that highlights must-play VR games worth checking out. Each week we encourage readers to share their thoughts about the chosen game in our Meta Must Plays Game Club on Facebook as well as across social media platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and others using the #MetaMustPlays hashtag.

Let’s dig into this week’s Meta Must Play: Nock!

The most addictive and rewarding sports-style games out there tend to be the simplest to describe on paper. Basketball is about trying to throw a ball through a hoop. Tennis is about hitting a ball over a net. Soccer is about kicking a ball into a net. Well, Nock is about shooting arrows at a ball to make it go into a net.

Simple, right? Well, it’s all the other chaos going on during that simple act that makes Nock so fantastic. For starters, you don’t have unlimited arrows so you have to pick up new ones on the field and pick your shots wisely. The loose interpretation of gravity and roller skates on every player means the speed of the game is ratcheted up a few degrees from what you’d expect in real life and it lends a certain level of intensity only possible in VR.

Even though Nock appears to be an intense VR game from a VR motion sickness perspective, the team at Normal put in a lot of work to make sure Nock is accessible for players of all VR experience levels. This is a fast-paced VR game that tests your reflexes and requires you to keep your head on a swivel at all times, but there are lots of clever design tricks employed to help ensure it’s comfortable.

My first foray into the arena of Nock was met with frantic spinning, genuine laughter, and a real sense of “cool” that only VR games can afford. This is the sort of game that feels like it could actually work as a real sport—that is, if there was a way to reenact it without needing ragdoll physics or defying the laws of gravity. In the meantime, we can settle for playing Nock on Quest 2 instead.

Nock from developer Normal is available now on Quest 2 for $9.99 USD. Don’t forget to join the Meta Must Plays Game Club on Facebook to chat with other VR gamers about the games each week and share your thoughts, screenshots, video clips, and more on social media using the #MetaMustPlays hashtag.
