Research Scientist, Perceptual Human Factors

We are seeking an individual with a background in perceptual systems, human factors and how they relate to device design. As a Human Factors Research Scientist at Oculus Research in Redmond WA, you will be helping device research and incubation teams uncover the limits of human perception and what their implications are for future AR & VR. We are looking for an individual who has a proven track record of driving device design with from the user experience perspective.

The individual will be expected to collaborate closely with our existing research (perception science, optics, and graphics) teams as well as engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research in perceptual mechanisms that result in user discomfort to derive device specifications for future product directions
  • Collaborate with internal research teams (perception science, optics, graphics and engineering) to explore the human factors that relate to user comfort
  • Derive novel experimental approaches to the measurement and assessment of human perceptual comfort, and use these methods to derive specifications based on objective and subjective measurements of the user experience
  • Understand how differences in demographics and user populations alter design changes
  • Engage with engineering and design to communicate and evangelize the findings of experiments

Minimum Qualifications

  • M.Sc. from an HFES accredited Human Factors Psychology program
  • Background in perceptual human factors, specializing in visual comfort and perceptual processes
  • 3+ years of training in psychophysical and empirical behavioral measurement
  • Illustrated understanding of the human visual system, including the ability to apply this model to novel situations and predict how the eye, brain, and body will respond through coursework, first authored publications and/or presentations at international conferences
  • Illustrated experience with HMD device design, as evidenced through first authored publications, presentations and/or previous industry placements through internships or work placements
  • 3+ years experience with conducting small and large-scale user studies
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the US beginning in 2017

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ph.D. from an HFES accredited Human Factors Psychology program
  • Certification from BCPE in Human Factors (CHFP, CPE or CUXP, CHFP)
  • Specialization in key areas of perceptual comfort such as vergence/accommodation, simulator sickness, user experience assessment, binocular vision & stereopsis
  • Experience with experimental methodology, psychophysics, and/or related statistical analyses
  • Prior experience with Matlab, R, Python, and/or C++
