Research Scientist, LED Process Integration

As a senior Research Scientist within the team building prototype display modules, your job will be figuring out how to build the RGB LED based light sources. You’ll be a critical member of a multi-disciplinary team contributing to our efforts to gain a scientific understanding of haptics, human perception, audio, input, computer vision, optics, display technology, and whatever else we dream up to create the ultimate experience. You will work closely with internal Oculus teams, academic institutions, external partners, and vendors to help define both system level and device level requirements and deliverables.


  • Provide expertise all the way through engineering phases of LEDs (wafer/epitaxial, device design, fabrication process) including the device physics, simulation and testing for red, green and blue LEDs (or Lasers).
  • Fabrication of semiconductor-based devices in a clean room environment.
  • Process development & optimization, process troubleshooting.
  • Delivery of devices for the needs of internal and external projects.
  • Designing DOEs, analyzing the data and reporting the key results during meetings.
  • Promote and support innovation to facilitate IP generation as appropriate.
  • Interface with suppliers and partners, from a technical and project management perspective.

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Micro-electronics, Physics, Electronic Engineering or Material Science.
  • 5+ years’ experience in III-V semiconductor (GaN and/or GaAs) devices.
  • Expertise in fabrication of optoelectronic devices such as red, green and blue LEDs and lasers.
  • Strong background in semiconductor physics & materials science.
  • Broad expertise in semiconductor material & device process integration and architecture.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven history of successful research in LED or laser performance optimisation.
  • Experience with semiconductor based display technology.
