Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Soft Robotics (PhD University Grad)

You're a roboticist with a deep knowledge of soft active materials and a passion for working on breakthrough soft robotic technology. You are interested in how to rationally design, rapidly manufacture, and systematically characterize soft robotic mechanisms using nonlinear hyper-viscoelastic models, embedded integrated sensors, and new active materials for actuation. At Oculus Research, you'll be involved in building cutting-edge prototypes and user experiences that explore the future of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR). Work alongside expert research scientists, mechanical engineers, material scientists, electrical engineers and software engineers to create the technology that makes VR and AR pervasive and universal.   • Design and manufacture soft robot devices
  • Synthesize new composites for soft actuating, sensing, and logic-capable materials
  • Integrate on board sensing and implement feedback control on soft robot systems
  • Perform mechanical and electrical experiments and numerical simulations using traditional and custom-built materials testers and finite element software.
  • Leverage bleeding-edge commercial additive manufacturing machines and invent new manufacturing methods where needed
  • Working with leading academic researchers on advancing our knowledge of soft active materials, large deformation mechanics, and novel rapid manufacturing techniques and apply them to soft robotics
  • Collaborate in a team environment across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines, making the architectural tradeoffs required to rapidly deliver soft robot prototypes
  • Learn constantly, dive into new areas with unfamiliar technologies, and embrace the ambiguity of AR/VR problem solving
  • Publish discoveries at the highest impact venues in robotics and materials science conferences and journals

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. in robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and materials science with soft matter focus
  • 2+ years experience with mechanical design including creating 3D models and 3D printing
  • 2+ years experience with physical experimentation and numerical modeling of highly deformable electrical and mechanical systems
  • Proven track record of robotics and soft materials research, including more than one publication and/or patents in each domain
  • Communication skills and demonstrated experience working across disciplines to drive solutions
  • Must be available to start employment on or after January 2018.
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the United States beginning in 2018.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Computer language, and MATLAB experience
  • Proficiency in computer aided design (CAD)
  • Familiarity with basic machine learning algorithms
  • Soft robotics experience
