Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Haptic Perception (PhD University Grad)

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Postdoctoral Research Scientist with expertise in haptic perception. The chosen candidate will be part of a highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities. The goal of the project is to understand how the touch of a virtual object enables compelling perceptual experiences in VR and AR. The position is a fixed-term (postdoctoral) contract for 24 months and is focused on developing research plans to find perceptually-motivated solutions for haptic and multisensory rendering. The ideal candidate will collaborate with a team of engineers to investigate problems of haptic optimization, and will help in the design of novel interfaces that allow interaction with virtual objects.

Responsibilities

  • Devise and execute research plans to investigate ways to improve the perception of virtual scenes through haptics
  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and artists to create novel hardware and software solutions
  • Investigate how the perceptual system processes haptic information acquired in a VR environment
  • Mentor MS/PhD interns and collaborate with external academic groups to advance our research goals
  • Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of mechanical engineering, computer science, cognitive science, engineering psychology, or related areas
  • Must be available to start employment on or after January 1, 2018
  • 2+ years experience with programming haptic devices using C++
  • 2+ years experience in tactile research
  • 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, or similar
  • 2+ years experience in applying perceptual knowledge to solve engineering problems
  • 1+ year of experience in signal processing
  • 1+ year of experience in control theory
  • Proven track record of achieving results, including first-authored journal publications
  • Interpersonal skills including cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. beginning in 2018

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as relevant World Haptics, Haptic Symposium, Transactions on Haptics, or similar
  • Expertise in virtual reality, psychophysics, engineering psychology, or computational modeling
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research that spans both perceptual research and engineering
  • Strong communication and personal management skills
