Research Intern, Soft Robotics (Masters/PhD University Student)

Internship - Engineering, Tech & Design | Redmond, WA

Oculus is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative interns with a passion for applied and fundamental research in fields related to virtual reality.
The focus of this internship is to further research in tracking, interfaces, and engine design for virtual reality. You’ll have the unique opportunity to work with the researchers and engineers who are defining the future of VR systems.
We are accepting applications from students interested in (but not limited to) the following areas:
- Psychophysics - Optical Tracking - Bio Engineering - Estimation and optimization - Mechatronics - Haptics - Micro/Nano fabrication

Our internships are twelve (12) to twenty four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

Responsibilities

  • Develop next generation soft robotic devices with an emphasis on both modeling and prototyping of the new concepts.
  • Explore the application of one of the following – direct 3D printing of soft devices
  • electroactive composite fluids and solids
  • predictive 3D models of soft mechanisms
  • feedback control of soft robots.
  • The position will have an emphasis on fundamental scientific and engineering questions related to the still-unknown mechanisms of soft active materials to inform new concepts and the perceptual impact of those concepts.
  • Collaborate with the larger Oculus Research team and provide creative leadership on soft robotics and active material technologies.
  • The type of work should be publishable research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences in robotics and materials science.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in the field of robotics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, bioengineering, and materials science with soft matter focus
  • Currently enrolled in a full time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship
  • 1+ years experience hardware prototyping, additive manufacturing, computational design and materials testing
  • 1+ years experience with experimental robotics and conducting laboratory work (i.e., demonstrated ability to construct proof-of-concept systems and to evaluate performance)
  • 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Mathematica, or similar
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Ability to obtain work authorization in the United States between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications
