Research Scientist, Rendering Assessment

We are seeking an individual with a background in visual processing, low-level vision, perceptual encoding, and computer graphics to drive research on novel rendering technologies for AR/VR. As a Research Scientist at Oculus Research in Redmond WA, you will be tackling the scientific challenges that define cutting-edge virtual and augmented reality display systems. The person in this role will study the impact of rendering algorithms on spatial, peripheral, temporal, and color vision, and the detectability of display artifacts and perceived image quality for VR/AR applications. Projects take advantage of internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering, allowing us to confront scientific questions that cannot be addressed with existing equipment.


  • Conduct research in computer graphics and rendering and determine how novel rendering approaches (e.g. foveated rendering) impact perceived image quality
  • Evaluate spatiotemporal and chromatic sensitivity as a function of eccentricity (foveated rendering), saliency and attention models, and establish minimum frame rate requirements as a function of persistence, stereoscopic vision, and temporal stability/latency
  • Derive novel experimental approaches to assess the impact of spatial, temporal and color properties of novel rendering systems for AR/VR
  • Employ existing knowledge of human sensory encoding and image/video quality metrics to help guide engineers toward effective solutions
  • Collaborate with internal research teams (optical, displays, software, applied physics & engineering) to explore aspects impacting user comfort and visual quality that are unique to AR/VR systems
  • Communicate findings of experiments and set target specifications for novel display systems

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Vision Science, Computer Graphics, Computational Imaging, or related field with an emphasis on user testing, image quality metrics, and/or perceptual modeling.
  • An understanding of perceptual metrics, and how to adapt software to best compensate for artifacts in the display technology
  • Background in modeling visual processes and how image processing and/or display design impacts the neural signals being encoded
  • Knowledge of human physiological optics, retinal encoding, or visual temporal processing illustrated through senior authored publications, and/or international conference presentations
  • 3+ years experience in employing industry standard image/video quality metrics
  • 5+ years of training and/or experience in psychophysical and empirical behavioral measurement

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exhibited experience working on the evaluation and engineering of computer graphics systems
  • Illustrated understanding of the complete image processing pipeline, from capture to reproduction through work experience, publications and/or academic training
  • Ability to work cross-group with cross-culture collaboration
