Applied Research Scientist — Perception Science

VR’s potential to change the world is immense—and we’re just getting started. We are seeking an Applied Research Scientist to join our User Research team and Insights organization. We are looking for a talented researcher with a background in basic and applied vision science to drive research on novel display technologies for VR. As an Applied Research Scientist at Oculus in Menlo Park CA, you will be tackling the scientific challenges that define the impact on image quality and visual comfort for VR applications. The person in this role will study the impact of display system architectures on depth perception, the detectability of display artifacts, perceived image quality, and visual comfort for VR applications. Projects take advantage of internal resources in mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering, allowing us to confront scientific and engineering questions which cannot be addressed with existing equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychophysical and modeling evaluation in display engineering and how novel displays and display controllers impact perceived image quality and visual comfort
  • Derive novel experimental approaches to assess the impact of spatial and temporal properties of novel display systems for AR/VR
  • Employ existing knowledge of human sensory encoding and display quality metrics to help guide engineers toward effective display solutions
  • Collaborate with internal research teams (optical, applied physics & engineering) to explore aspects of displays impacting user comfort that are unique to AR/VR systems
  • Communicate findings of experiments and set target specifications for novel display systems

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in vision science, physiological optics, bioengineering, or related field with an emphasis on psychophysics and/or perceptual modeling.
  • Background in understanding stereopsis, physiological optics, eye movements, and modeling visual processes illustrated through senior authored publications, and/or international conference presentations
  • Experience with human subject trials
  • Understanding related technologies such as near eye display systems, electronic displays, depth sensing, eye tracking.
  • 2+ years experience in addressing applied vision science questions
  • Experience with display calibration and image rendering
  • 5+ years of training and/or experience in psychophysical and empirical behavioral measurement
  • Interpersonal skills - cross-group and cross-culture collaboration

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exhibited experience working on the evaluation and engineering of rendering algorithms and novel display technologies
  • Illustrated understanding of the complete image generation pipeline, from capture to reproduction through work experience, publications and/or academic training
