Postdoctoral Research Scientist, Imaging Systems (PhD University Grad)

Oculus Research at Facebook is a world leader in the development of future generations of AR/VR systems. We are currently seeking an innovative postdoctoral research scientist in our research location in Redmond, WA. The research agenda is focused on computer vision system that is multi-disciplinary and at the intersection of sensing hardware and software across the stack of sensors, optics, signal processing and computer vision applications. The position is a fixed-term (postdoctoral) contract for 24 months and requires a PhD in electrical engineering, computer science, applied physics, perception science or similar field.


  • Work closely with computer vision and machine perception teams to understand the critical HW parameters and their impact on the algorithm and system performance.
  • Build a full stack system model that encompasses the sensors, the optics, the data capture and processing, and various noise models. The simulator will interface with the application stack.
  • Dataset acquisition and processing, define performance matrix and evaluation criteria
  • Explore ground breaking new sensing technologies and modality including new sensor pixel and architecture.
  • Mentor MS/PhD interns and collaborate with external academic groups to advance our research goals
  • Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of sensor design, imaging and signal processing, computer vision and graphics, machine learning, perception science, or a related field.
  • Must be available to start employment on or after January 1, 2018
  • 5+ years research experience in sensing systems, computer vision systems, and hardware development in academic research
  • 3+ years experience programming with C/C++, Python, MATLAB, Torch, or similar languages
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. beginning in 2018

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in system modeling across data/image capture, signal processing pipeline, algorithm, and functional behaviors
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by grants, fellowships, patents, as well as first-authored publications at leading workshops or conferences such as JSSC, IEEE TCAS, ICCV, CVPR, SIGGRAPH, or similar
