Hardware Researcher

Design & User Experience | Seattle, WA

Oculus is looking for world-class Hardware Researcher with excellent communication and people skills. As a Hardware Researcher at Oculus, you must be an expert researcher with a proven track record of influencing the hardware design of complex and diverse products. While the role will initially focus on near-term research, we are looking for candidates with experience in generative, iterative and evaluative projects – you must be familiar with every aspect of the product development lifecycle including up-front research and discovery, definition, and analysis of requirements. You must become a trusted, strategic partner to product stakeholders by delivering actionable insights that lead to demonstrable business value. To this end, you will be required to articulate the findings from your research to design, engineering and product leadership and be a strong advocate for the role of research in product development. You must be a data expert, but also be able to be creative and develop new methodologies for emerging technologies such as VR. It's not enough to answer interesting questions about user behavior; our team focuses on impact. We value the ability to translate observations about user behavior into actionable insights. The Hardware Researcher is a full-time position in Seattle, reporting into the User Experience organization. However, you must also build strong relationships with other teams in different locations such as Menlo Park and London.


  • Conduct up-front generative product opportunity research, on-going usability tests, surveys, define long-term user research needs and metrics for hardware and software experiences
  • Conduct in-lab and field usability evaluation of products & prototypes
  • Develop baseline user metrics for VR hardware and software experiences
  • Proactively involve designers, engineers & product managers in the research process
  • Quickly produce reports that cut to the chase of the underlying user issues
  • Present to a variety of audiences from design team, engineering team to executive teams
  • Share best practices & new techniques with the User Research group
  • Be involved in the day-to-day design and understanding of the opportunities associated with VR

Minimum Qualifications

  • 1+ years of research experience in both hardware and software
  • Experience on consumer devices, rather than enterprise or medical
  • Demonstrated communication and presentation skills with a focus on communicating how learnings impact the product
  • Experience working with designers and engineers to figure out the prototypes and methodologies, experienced working with and recommending prototypes
  • Experience in applied human factors, leveraging anthropometric measures and iterative research to refine and optimize hardware experiences
  • Demonstrated experience in collaboration with designers and engineers, ability to build cross-functional relationships
  • Demonstrated experience creating test methods/setups to address the needs of unusual/challenging tests
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical concepts (e.g., sampling) and methods (e.g., descriptive, inferential) and/or other data-science related analysis

Preferred Qualifications

  • M.A / M.S or PH.D in Human Factors, Human Computer Interaction (HCI), Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, Sociology or a related field.
