Laser Safety Lead

The Laser Safety Lead partners with Oculus Research, Oculus and User Study teams to establish safe operating procedures for hardware, manufactured systems, and research study protocols for various test conditions and prototype devices across multiple locations. This position will serve as safety representative for protocol design changes involving radiation in research studies including providing expert review of changes relating to hardware devices, software functions, and testing environment. Use of lasers and LEDs are vital in the development of Augmented and Virtual Reality and this role will play a key part in ensuring the safety of research teams. This role serves as laser and radiation safety officer. The ideal candidate collaborates with many research teams, lab managers, legal and site operations in a fast-paced environment to provide sound input to improve the safety of our researchers and study participants.


  • Serve as Oculus and Oculus Research laser safety lead.
  • Develop and implement laser safety procedures, programs and training across all Oculus locations
  • Develop and implement minimum design standards for all laser and high powered light equipment across multiple locations
  • Establish and implement protocols for researchers performing user studies involving ionizing and non-ionizing radiation to ensure safety of researchers, study administrators and study participants
  • Establish and implement protocols for researchers altering prototype design for safe device application
  • Establish metrics reporting system for adverse health events or incidents associated with user study or protocol design changes as it related to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation
  • Partner with equipment testing firms to assess field tests on modified or custom-built equipment
  • Perform regulatory review and obtain appropriate permits and testing for radiation sources
  • Confirm accuracy of device performance calculations
  • Lead the execution of special projects

Minimum Qualifications

  • Ability to prioritize workload in a fast-paced, frequently changing environment while remaining detailed and organized
  • Interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interface with individuals at various levels, both internal and external
  • Analytical, with problem-solving abilities and resolution skills
  • Ability to work on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Proven ability to recognize and adapt to company
  • Laser Safety Officer or ability to obtain certification
  • BS Degree in Industrial Hygiene, Electrical Engineering, Health Physics, Safety Engineering or related field
  • Minimum 10 years of experience evaluating safety of semi-conductors, lasers, LEDs or similar equipment
  • Experience with ANSI Z136 Safe Use of Laser standards
  • Ability to travel 30% including International travel

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Washington Department of Ecology and Labor and Industry Regulations
  • Prior work in semi-conductor, equipment development or laboratory environment
