Research Intern, Inertial Motion Sensors (Masters/PhD University Student)

Internship - Engineering, Tech & Design | Redmond, WA

Oculus is a world leader in the design of virtual reality systems. We are currently seeking innovative research interns with a passion for technology to develop sensor hardware and algorithms at our research location in Redmond, WA. This role is focused on testing and characterization of inertial measurement systems and novel imaging technologies, with a possible emphasis on IMU characterization, system integration, quantitative performance modeling, design and evaluation of sensor architectures, or similar topics. The position requires a candidate be actively pursuing a PhD in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, or similar.

Our internships are sixteen (16) to twenty-four (24) weeks long and we have various start dates throughout the year.

  • Design test plan and experimental setup
  • Test and characterize sensors against spec
  • Develop new data algorithms compatible with novel sensor prototype hardware
  • Develop mathematical models that quantitatively describe system performance
  • Work cross functionally with technical experts in other disciplines to develop experimental setups and prototype concepts
  • Summarize and communicate results to technical leads across Oculus Research

Minimum Qualifications

  • Pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in the field of the electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, or related field.
  • Currently enrolled in a full time degree program and returning to the program after the completion of the internship.
  • Expertise with characterizing inertial measurement systems, gyroscopes, accelerometers, magnetometers, knowledge of statistical methods in data analysis, electrical and mechanical instrumentation.
  • 2+ years' experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, R, C++, C#, or similar
  • 2+ years' experience working with or developing inertial-based sensors or novel imaging technologies
  • Must be available for 4-6 month internship between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018
  • Interpersonal skills: cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
  • Able to obtain work authorization in the U.S. between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2018

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability in working with IMUs, cameras, and computer vision algorithms
  • Demonstrated ability with numerical optimization and statistical data analysis
  • Demonstrated experience via an internship, work experience, or widely used contributions to open source projects.
  • Proven track record of achieving significant results as demonstrated by first-authored publications.
