Technical Artist

Join a team of designers and engineers who are passionate about creating a cutting-edge VR experience and establishing Oculus as an industry leader. As an experienced Technical Artist, you will explore, prototype, and build experiences that help define the future of VR, experimenting with bold ideas in areas including haptics, tracking, user experience, VFX and audio. You will be in the forefront of user interface design creating a new visual language for virtual spaces and applying it consistently through multiple 3D and 2D platforms. You will work alongside expert Computer Graphics Engineers, Software Engineers, Visual Designers, Motion Designers, 3D Generalists, and User Interface Designers to create the technology that makes VR universally compelling.

This position is full-time and based in Menlo Park.


  • Develop experience prototypes working as a technical art generalist on a small team.
  • Partner closely with the engineering and design teams to define and develop content in Unity, Unreal, VR Shell, and other graphic engines.
  • Design, manage and maintain the pipeline from artists and designers through to deployment.
  • Design, execute, and support complex asset solutions involving but not limited to 3D content and VFX.
  • Optimize content through enhancing performance and instructing the artists and designers on asset creation, modeling and texturing best practices.
  • Work closely with engineers to implement interactive objects and systems.
  • Collaborate with engineers to develop and test new features, prototype shader code, and provide useful feedback during testing phases.
  • Be well versed in various lighting techniques and instruct the artists in lighting best practices.
  • Synthesize broad, ambiguous business goals and work with the Product Design team to create compelling environments for VR.
  • Give and solicit real-time feedback from other designers and engineers to continually raise the quality and craftsmanship of the product.
  • Quickly solve issues with your cross-functional leads.
  • Clearly articulate design decisions to a vast set of internal stakeholders.
  • Thrive in dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • Responsible for maintaining assets from creation to shipping.
  • Ability to collaborate and iterate based on the team's needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with 3D asset content creation including modeling, texturing, materials, and lighting, for both mobile and high-end specs.
  • Knowledge of Unity and Unreal.
  • Knowledge of 3D modeling and asset creation packages like Maya, Houdini, Substance Painter, Substance Designer, ZBrush, Knald, Marmoset, Photoshop, etc.
  • Experience with VFX solutions including Houdini, FumeFX, and Maya Fluids.
  • Experience with game optimization techniques.
  • Shader programming experience.
  • Scripting experience with MEL, Python, C#, Javascript and C++.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in game development or film as a Technical Artist.
  • Content development experience, including shipping one or more titles.
  • Prior virtual reality experience.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies.
