Perception Research Scientist

At Facebook Reality Labs, our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Researcher to join our team, whose mission is to create and apply scientific knowledge about the cognitive system to improve human experiences in the augmented world. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in defining and executing human behavioral experiments with a focus on perceptual science or developing computational models of perceptual-motor control and who can work with a team of researchers who are identifying perceptually-motivated solutions for haptic and multisensory rendering in human computer interaction for future AR and VR experiences. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a diverse and highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Devise and execute research plans, aligned with team goals, to investigate ways to improve the perception of virtual scenes through multi-sensory integration, or haptics or vision alone
  • Work effectively with a diverse, interdisciplinary group of researchers & engineers within and across teams
  • Mentor MS/PhD interns, contribute to your peer’s projects and collaborate with external academic groups to advance our research goals

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD degree in the field of multi-sensory integration, multi-sensory perception, perception, cognitive science, engineering psychology or related areas
  • 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, or similar
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research that spans both perceptual research and engineering

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in the domain of perceptual-motor or sensorimotor control
  • Experience in virtual reality, psychophysics, engineering psychology, or computational modeling
  • Communication, interpersonal and personal management skills
  • 2+ years of experience in industry applying perceptual knowledge to solve engineering problems
  • Track record of achieving results, including first-authored journal publications
