Silicon Prototyping Engineer

Facebook AR/VR focuses on delivering Facebook's vision through Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR). The compute performance and power efficiency requirements of Virtual and Augmented Reality require custom silicon. Facebook Silicon Architecture team is driving the state of the art forward with breakthrough work in computer vision, machine learning, mixed reality, graphics, displays, sensors, and new ways to map the human body. Our chips will enable AR and VR devices where our real and virtual world will mix and match throughout the day. We believe the only way to achieve our goals is to look at the entire stack, from transistor, through architecture, to firmware, and algorithms.
Facebook is looking for a Silicon Prototyping Engineer who will work with a world-class group of architects and engineers. This ideal candidate will understand the full stack architecture down to silicon development to ensure consistency from Architecture to Product via our prototyping efforts. We are seeking to drive Architecture level FPGA and Emulation prototyping which enables tuning of next generation Silicon Architectures.
This role will be located in Redmond, WA.


  • Work with Architecture teams to surpass state of the art for metrics such as compute, bandwidth and power consumption through prototype investigations.
  • Work across disciplines, brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, juggle/coordinate multiple initiatives, drive a concept into a prototype.
  • Perform architectural studies including selecting ASIC technologies, FPGA ASIC emulation, and other system topics such as interface approaches, etc.
  • Support FPGA/RTL engineers implementing algorithms for real-time evaluation and Silicon SoC Architects with integration, documentation and implementation.
  • Produce detailed documents and SystemC models matching the proposed implementation, and produce detailed tradeoff analyses for executive review and product roadmap decisions.
  • Travel both domestically and internationally.
  • Work as an individual contributor in a multidisciplinary international team.
  • Demonstrate creative and critical thinking while being proactive to solve technical problems.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MS, EE, or CS Degree or equivalent work experience.
  • 7+ years of experience as a Digital Design Engineer or Silicon Architect with silicon production and shipping experience.
  • 1+ years of experience with methods for partitioning a solution across FPGA, Emulation, C-Models, Hardware and SW.
  • Experience evaluating architectural tradeoffs between speed, performance, power, in a prototyping environment.
  • Experience with employing scientific methods to debug, diagnose and drive the resolution of system issues.
  • Experience working in a consumer electronics field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with top down high-level-model to HW mapping.
  • Experience mapping designs to FPGA.
  • Experience with Design Verification of early prototypes.
  • Knowledge of industry trends and disruptive technologies.
  • Programming experience in C or C++.
  • Project lead or mentorship experience in a team environment.
