Mechanical Engineer, Technical Manager

AR/VR | Redmond, WA

As a Mechanical Engineer TLM at Facebook, you will take a critical role in developing next generation AR Systems. You will become part of a team exploring new concepts through mechanical design and fast iterative prototyping. A wide range of approaches will be explored combining electrical, mechanical, optical, firmware, and software techniques. We want people who work well in teams, can brainstorm big ideas, work in new technology areas, are able to drive a concept into a prototype and then mature the design to high-volume consumer product solution. We are looking for someone with a productive mindset who can apply their mechanical engineering expertise to solve problems in creative, insightful ways. Our ideal candidate has a strong fundamental engineering background, prototyping skills, 3D CAD capability, and experience designing and manufacturing consumer technology products.


  • Lead Mechanical Engineering activities in cross-functional hardware team.
  • Model, build, test, and refine prototypes and assembly processes.
  • Work across the full product development cycle, from concept inception to shipping product.
  • Manage wide variety of stakeholders while leading process definition.
  • Apply rigorous engineering and tolerance techniques to high precision design requirements in the areas such as Optics, Mechanics, and Motion Control.
  • Provide assignments, direction and manage priorities to team.
  • Provide management, career guidance and mentorship to team.

Minimum Qualifications

  • 5+ years experience working on ME designs in variety of materials, processes and phases of product development.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing techniques, both rapid and high volume.
  • Leading test definition, prioritization, and execution while managing conversation.
  • Experience in 3D design modeling and physical prototyping (NX and/or SolidWorks).
  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Knowledge and application of GD&T techniques and associated metrology approaches.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiar with electronics and mechanical system testing, and associated data analysis and associated statistics (IDOV DFSS, Lean Sigma).
  • Experience designing with Haptics, Elastomers, and/or Soft Goods.
  • Proven record leading cross functional teams to execute product development on schedule.
  • Proven record of successfully managing teams.
  • Proven record of managing careers and careers development for led teams.
  • Project/Program management experience.
  • Designing and implementing cross functional process while leading stakeholders to participate.
  • Experience scaling manufacturing/integration methods from low to high volumes.
  • 10+ years experience working on ME products.
  • Masters in Systems, Mechanical, Electrical Engineering, Project Management, or similar.
