Back-end and Assembly Process Development Manager

At Facebook, we’re developing AR/VR displays for the future. As a Backend and Assembly Process Engineering Manager, your role will be to recommend and develop new assembly processes to drive the innovation cycle and product roadmap. This role assumes ownership of process flow and integration within the backend and assembly modules and will be responsible for defining and developing material sets, test vehicles, DOEs, and process control plans to successfully develop and sustain reliable manufacturable products. The ideal candidate will have professional experience demonstrating the ability to work strategically with internal research teams, academic institutions, external partners, and vendors. You will help define requirements and deliverables, schedule and track project progress. To be successful, you will eliminate barriers to your team’s success and clearly communicate their work to all stakeholders. Ideal team members are adaptable and resilient, with the ability to find creative solutions when lacking information and act outside your formal area of responsibility when needed.


  • Manage the backend and assembly process engineering team
  • First-level manager of processes such as die singulation, pick & place and sorting, flip chip die bonding, wafer bonding, underfills, micro-dispensing, and grinding/polishing
  • Support the overall assembly strategy for alignment with our commercial direction and performance/yield roadmaps
  • Continuously monitor and upgrade our equipment/processing capabilities to support the roadmap
  • Engage with our internal and external development partners to drive device integration knowledge and development
  • Hands-on engagement in the evaluation of new device processing
  • Support of technology transfer to new sites
  • Management of partner and vendor engagements
  • Expect to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Materials Science, Physics, Engineering, or related fields (or equivalent experience)
  • Backend and/or assembly process development or integration experience, preferably in silicon or compound semiconductor industries
  • Experience managing a technical team
  • Experience engaging with partners, service providers, and equipment suppliers
  • Deep technical expertise in one or more of the following areas: CMP, electroplating, bonding, dicing/grinding, or packaging
  • Statistical analysis skill, proficient in JMP, Matlab, SQL etc. Experience with SPC is a plus
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Genuine interest in people and building strong cross-functional relationships

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with new product introduction and technology transfer best practices and tools
  • Experience with practicing phased product development processes
  • Experience building, coordinating and maintaining schedules across multiple teams
  • Experience in backend, assembly, and/or packaging of LEDs
