Research Scientist

Research | Redmond, WA

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Research Scientist with expertise in quantitative methods for human behavioral data. Candidates should understand and be able to develop methods to identify meaningful patterns in data from a broad range of sources including interactions with Facebook, human computer interaction and psychophysics for perception and cognition. Deeper experience with data from psychophysics experiments is highly desired as the candidate will be expected to work closely with a team of researchers whose goal is to identify perceptually-motivated solutions for haptic and multisensory rendering in human computer interaction. More broadly, the chosen candidate will work with a highly interdisciplinary team of researchers and engineers and will have access to cutting edge technology, resources, and testing facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Develop novel methods to efficiently sample from potentially high dimensional stimulus spaces and develop models to map from input spaces to performance measures and judgments of experience
  • Devise and execute research plans to investigate ways to improve the perception of virtual scenes through haptics or multi-sensory integration
  • Mine Facebook data for insights into human-computer interaction and work with HCI researchers to identify ways that knowledge can be used in software development for new interaction devices
  • Mentor MS/PhD interns and collaborate with external academic groups to advance our research goals
  • Publish research results in top-tier journals and at leading international conferences

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD degree or completing a postdoctoral assignment in the field of applied mathematics, mechanical engineering, computer science, cognitive science, engineering psychology, or related areas
  • 2+ years experience with scientific programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, Mathematica, or similar
  • Experience in virtual reality, psychophysics, engineering psychology, or computational modeling
  • Experience with interdisciplinary research that spans both perceptual research and engineering
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire, and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment

Preferred Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in applying perceptual knowledge to solve engineering problems
  • 1+ years of experience in signal processing
  • Interpersonal skills including cross-group and cross-culture collaboration
