Heroes of the Empire

This 60 minute documentary follows the 501st UK Garrison Star Wars™ costuming club around the UK as they attend a variety of fundraising events - revealing the side of costuming you’ve never seen before. Every great achievement or franchise throughout history starts with a single idea. In 1977, George Lucas revealed to the world what was known at the time as, “The Star Wars”. Star Wars™ has arguably had a profound influence on the science fiction film genre and audiences alike. Spanning four decades, the fan base is global and continuing to grow. In the year 2000 Graham Campbell, founder of the 501st UK Garrison had a single idea to create a Star Wars™ costuming club. It started with just four members.

Now, two decades later the 501st UK Garrison is a not-for-profit charity and has five hundred members and growing…. From international film premieres to children’s hospital visits, witness the impact that the UK Garrison (UKG) have on the hearts and minds of the fans they meet. Many people have a misguided perception of costumers, labelling them as “nerds” and “geeks”. HEROES OF THE EMPIRE explores and challenges this perception, meeting the families and the fans who have been directly inspired and supported by the UKG.

The film reveals the wide variety of people who are inspired to join the UKG, from all walks of life and occupations. For these individuals, being “Heroes of the Empire” is their true identity.
