Quill, which every Touch owner will get for free, is nothing short of spectacular. I thought initially that there would be a lot of overlap between Oculus Medium and Quill (both art-focused in-house projects from Oculus), but Quill does seem to firmly own its own style—Medium is to clay as Quill is to sketching.
Dear Angelica is a journey through the magical and dreamlike ways we remember lost ones and, even though they are gone, what remains of the ones we loved. Cast: Geena Davis, Mae Whitman.
VR has quite a bit to offer creative types in terms of building worlds and images that would be impossible otherwise. Oculus Story Studio is looking to redefine the concept of a digital art with their latest effort, Quill.
Quill is a virtual reality illustration program conceived by Oculus Story Studio — not to be confused with the HTC Vive painting app Tilt Brush, or the Oculus Rift sculpting app Medium. What sets it apart from either of these is that it’s not primarily an end product for users, it’s a tool for professional […]
Oculus Story Studio’s third foray into virtual reality filmmaking doesn’t currently involve a single frame of animation, and it may still be the most impressive thing the studio has ever done.
On a recent afternoon in sparsely chic offices here, the people making the virtual-reality animated short “Henry” convened to watch footage of their cutting-edge film. The group of about a dozen — mostly young and many of them with Pixar backgrounds — gathered in a semicircle as the director, a gregarious filmmaker named Ramiro Lopez […]
We asked Oculus Story Studio’s creative director Saschka Unseld and character lead Bernhard Haux to explain that process for Henry, their bittersweet animated short about a balloon-loving hedgehog.
In a fancy room in an even fancier hotel during January’s Sundance Film Festival, Saschka Unseld is doing something he’s not used to doing: playing pitchman. But when you’re trying to change the way people watch movies, you do what you have to. The room today is full of the usual festival types—filmmakers, press, Adrian […]
Virtual-reality firm Oculus is making a move into original film content. The manufacturer of the much-anticipated Rift headset is expected to announce at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday that it is launching a new unit called Story Studio and has hired Pixar veteran Saschka Unseld to run it. Working with a team of about […]
Amidst the premieres taking place at the Sundance Film Festival is one for “Lost,” a virtual reality movie that’s the first project to come out of Story Studio, a new inhouse production arm of Facebook’s Oculus that aims to help filmmakers figure out how to produce VR projects. Led by former Pixar Animation Studios vets, […]
You’ll have to excuse me. I’m going to sound a little excited now. Earlier today Oculus announced Story Studio, its in-house production team dedicated to producing virtual reality movies. We’ve been seeing VR narrative experiences for years at this point, and while they’ve been getting more and more impressive, they’ve still been iterative steps forward. […]
If you build the content, they will come. That is the theory behind Oculus VR’s Story Studio, a new in-house laboratory to create films in virtual reality and to research best practices for storytelling.
